Louis Cane

An elusive and resolutely independent French artist, Louis Cane (1943-2024) spent more than fifty years developing a body of work that resists categorization. He never established hierarchies between practices. He allowed himself to paint directly on bronze, to revisit the old masters with wit, to bring the sacred into dialogue with the everyday, and art history with the objects of life. He loved surface as a painter loves canvas, and brought ancient and contemporary materials into dialogue: lacquer and resin, old and new. Cane gradually assembled a team of highly skilled craftsmen around him, building his own workshops dedicated to cabinetmaking, marquetry and bronze casting. Guided by his modern vision and uncompromising standards, these same workshops continue to operate today under the direction of his daughter, Florence Cane. Within them, these final editions of the furniture, lighting and decorative objects conceived during Louis Cane’s lifetime are still produced, by the very artisans who worked alongside him for decades.
