Elizabeth Garouste

November 2021

Elizabeth Garouste makes her debut on the West Coast with an exhibition that explores hellenistic
symbols, traditional fabrics from the United Kingdom and simple childhood pleasures to create a
uniquely Garoustian universe that is at once elegant, fantastic and fun. Ralph Pucci says,“Elizabeth’s
work is a breath of fresh air. So playful, but intelligent and sophisticated.”

⁣She excels at preserving decorative arts traditions while breaking with conventional aesthetics. The
mosaic of tiles on the Ali Table suggests inspiration drawn from antiquity, yet the piece is a paradigm
for the art of imperfection with the hand-of-the-artist evident in the non-linear patterns and
biomorphic base. ⁣Similarly, the hammered bronze body of the Zita Table Lamp is rooted in the
decorative arts tradition while the patterned lampshade recalls the 20th-century spirit of Matisse and
Calder. ⁣The opening of the exhibition is accompanied by specially-choreographed vignettes created
by Holly Rothschild.
